Considering my recent troubles with my Ultratech I decided to recheck all of my stones and abrasives.
Checking for loading, poor condition surfaces, flatness. So I took my stones and today flattened and conditioned all of them, whether I thought they needed it yet or not. Then I turned to my collection and spied my Spyderco UF Sharp Maker rod.
I remembered Cliffs video on some rods for the Sharp Maker being curved slightly so I figured I should try and check the flatness on the unused side of the rod I use for double checking aggression. Now the way I did it ruined the rod on one side, it is no longer a UF rod. I knew it had a slight bend, but I wanted to check for flatness both in length and width and see the high and low spots. I ran a broad sharpie down the unused side completely covering the stone and gave it a few passes with a DMT extra coarse diasharp plate.
That thing has the dips and peaks like one of my worst stones before it was reconditioned. I actually have spent a couple minutes scrubbing it and I still haven't flattened it. The dips are almost like a snake serpentine along the length of the stone.
Just a little bit of info thought I should share.
