Joe Calton has done some awesome experiments with oil stones lately, and has a microscope hooked up so you can see the surface of the stone and the results on the steel and edge of the blade. This reminds me of when Cliff Stamp bought a ton of Japanese Waterstones from Stu of Tools From Japan and evaluated the stones and how they work. Joe does a similar thing here, showing how the stones need to be flattened and resurfaced to work, along with the use of a good lubricant like mineral oil. Good stuff here, as these stones work differently that synthetic or natural Japanese stones, but are just as effective with the right stone maintenance and sharpening technique. Joe is a master at making the hard to describe and understand easy and simple to get for the average person.
